Helaba supports education, culture, the arts, social causes, sport, the environment and academia in a variety of ways: through memberships, sponsoring, charitable donations and as a benefactor, we invest with the specific goal of promoting social cohesion.

As a commercial bank, we are successful on both a national and international level. As a Landesbank, we feel a special connection to our home region of Hesse and Thuringia. Since 2012, we have also been able to count the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg as part of our core region. Close links with our owner states, deep local roots and a firmly embedded place in the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe are key elements that define our identity. Our social commitment is evidence that we take our responsibility seriously.

The Frankfurter Sparkasse Foundation

The Frankfurter Sparkasse Foundation supports many cultural, social, local and educational projects in and around Frankfurt. We are convinced that the better the lives of the citizens of Frankfurt and its environs are, the more successful Frankfurter Sparkasse is. With its foundation, Frankfurter Sparkasse has placed its social activities on an independent financial footing. The Frankfurter Sparkasse Foundation is endowed with capital of approximately EUR 17.9 million.

The arts

In order to promote the arts, Helaba supports museums and exhibition projects, in particular the Museum for Modern Art (MMK) and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

In terms of its own art collection, Helaba concentrates on works by contemporary international artists. Our focus is on new young talent; supporting and promoting them is one of Helaba’s primary goals.

Museum for Modern Art

The Museum for Modern Art (MMK) in Frankfurt was opened in 1991 and is considered to be one of the most significant museums for contemporary art in the world. Helaba has been a patron of the museum since 2005. In this capacity, its primary goal is to support the museum in its original objective: to expand its collection. Our commitment, extending far beyond support for individual events and temporary exhibitions, guarantees permanent support for the museum. In addition, Helaba is one of the founding partners of MMK 2 in the TaunusTurm skyscraper, an annex of the museum opened in 2014. The additional exhibition space of 1,700 m2 allows for an even broader presentation of MMK’s collection.

The Städel Museum

The Städel Museum (Städelsches Kunstinstitut) is one of the oldest art museums in Germany. In 1815, Johann Friedrich Städel laid the cornerstone for an art collection in his last will and testament. Today, it encompasses significant major works of all important European movements from the 14th century up to the present. Helaba has been a patron of the museum since 1999 and has sponsored the romanticist hall, the Galerie Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen. Additionally, it supports some of the museum’s outstanding projects, e.g. the exhibition “Rubens – The Power of Transformation” in 2017.

documenta 14

Also in 2017, Helaba was once again one of the principal sponsors, in association with the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, of the quinquennial documenta. The documenta is considered to be the most important event for the contemporary visual arts in the world, incorporating elements of painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, film and video, performance, sound and architecture. d14 was entitled “Learning from Athens”. This year, the major exhibition was divided equally between Athens and the documenta’s usual home in Kassel. It attracted around 900,000 visitors to Kassel and 340,000 to Athens – a new record.

Münster Sculpture Projects

In association with the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, Helaba has been supporting the Sculpture Projects in the Westphalian city of Münster since their inception in 1977. In 2017, the exhibition curators invited 35 artists to realise a project at a place of their choosing within the urban area of Münster. The works, most of which were accessible to the public, enable a wide audience to be routinely confronted with modern sculpture in an urban setting. The Münster Sculpture Projects, which take place every ten years, have developed into a significant and large-scale cultural event with international appeal.

The concept of our art collection

We consider support for the arts and a commitment to culture to be our obligation to society. These tasks are an accepted part of our corporate culture. The Domstufen Festival in Erfurt, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Helaba CLASSICnights in Frankfurt’s Alte Oper and the Ruhr Piano Festival are examples of our participation in supporting cultural activities in our regions.

Domstufen Festival in Erfurt

The Domstufen Festival in Erfurt attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. Stage plays and oratorios are performed in front of the imposing backdrop of Erfurt’s cathedral. In association with the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, Helaba has been festival’s main sponsor since it was launched in 1994. Over the years, the festival has developed into an event that also enjoys an excellent reputation on the international art scene.

Rheingau Music Festival

With annual visitor numbers of around 120,000, the Rheingau Music Festival is the largest festival in Europe that is almost exclusively privately financed. It provides a stage for national and international artists at over 40 venues. Throughout the summer months, audiences are enchanted by jazz, classical music or burlesque at high-quality concerts and events. We have been sup-porting the festival since 1991 and are delighted by the outstanding international reputation.
Helaba CLASSICnights in the Alte Oper Frankfurt
As the sponsor, we invite classical orchestras from major financial centres to Frankfurt to join Helaba CLASSICnights in Frank-furt’s Alte Oper concert hall. Orchestras of global renown, such as the London Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of Milan’s La Scala opera house as well as the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, have already accepted this invitation in the past.

Ruhr Piano Festival

The Ruhr Piano Festival, which has achieved international significance, presents outstanding artists year after year. In addition, promising young talented pianists, competition winners and debutants are invited. We have a particularly strong commitment to supporting them in the scope of our sponsoring.

Both professional and grassroots sports are priorities for us. In the area of professional sports, Helaba sponsors “Sporthilfe Hessen”, which provides financial support to promising young sportsmen and women, and is a premium partner of the first division soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt. We support a major winter sports event in the form of the Luge World Cup in Oberhof. In terms of grassroots sports, we support running events such as the Dusseldorf Marathon and the Ironman Night Run in Frankfurt am Main.

Partner of Stiftung Sporthilfe

The path to becoming a top athlete requires financial security. Talent and aptitude are not the only things that count on the way to major sporting achievements but also an absolute focus on discipline. That is why we support Stiftung Sporthilfe Hessen. It enables top athletes to obtain medical treatment by a sports doctor, a transfer to sports facilities, assistance in receiving further training as well as, in exceptional cases, the funds to cover living costs.

Premium Partner of 1. FFC Frankfurt

It is important to us that the Rhine-Main area should offer Bundesliga-level football and that is why we have been supporting Eintracht Frankfurt since 2003, and as a Premium Partner since 2006. In 2017, our subsidiary Frankfurter Sparkasse took over the role of Premium Partner. Since 2018, Helaba is Premium Partner of 1. FFC Frankfurt, the sucessful womens soccer team.

Customers of Frankfurter Sparkasse can choose to have the AdlerCard, a Sparkasse debit card with an Eintracht design. Every AdlerCard is regularly entered in prize draws in which exclusive match tickets, fan merchandise and more can be won.

Luge in Oberhof

Since 2008, Helaba has been supporting the Luge World Cup in Oberhof as the principal sponsor. Apart from high performance, the factors that guarantee success also include risk awareness and courage. We see clear parallels in these values to the way we see ourselves. For this reason, we are extremely glad to be supporting the Luge World Cup.

The productive exchange of ideas between academia and industry is essential for us. That is why we support e.g. the Goethe University’s House of Finance in Frankfurt am Main in its academic activities.

Endowed chair at House of Finance

The House of Finance at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main is one of the leading research and teaching establishments in the areas of financial economy and financial law. With the support of Helaba, Frankfurt’s Goethe University established an endowed chair in 2017 for the field of “Real Estate Finance” at the House of Finance. From 2017 to 2021, we will provide endowments of EUR 200,000 per year in order to equip the chair with both the human and material resources it needs. In this way, we want to promote and enhance the quality of research and teaching at the House of Finance.

Green and Sustainable Finance Cluster Germany

Helaba supports the Green and Sustainable Finance Cluster Germany via a Platin sponsorship and through WIBank as a founding member. The Cluster aims to promote sustainable finance through connecting financial expertise and developing innovative product solutions. The Cluster was created on the initiative of the Hessian Ministry for Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development and is connected to the national UNEP centre at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
